Queenstown parkrun – Event number 76 – 14th December 2019

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 76
14th December 2019

This week 98 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 40 were first timers and 21 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 16 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Singapore, and Slovakia!

This week saw a return to drier conditions for our fave weekly 5km event.  The weather calmed and the puddles cleared making our course clear for ready for running.  Unfortunately Wanaka parkrun had to cancel again this weekend due to the lake flooding and damaging their course.  The cancellation gave a number of Wanaka parkrunners the ability to come over and run our course including Event Directors Adam and Jane Sharman. Whilst we were bummed to hear they had to cancel their event, we were excited to have our friends from over the Crown Range come visit us for a run.  We hope things improve over the coming days so that Wanaka parkrun can get back to business as soon as possible.

Visiting parkrunner from Australia, Laclan Rayner, was first across the line today at 18:30.  He was followed in by fellow Australian Tim Garrett at 19:10.  Auckland based parkrunner Paul Rose rounded out the top three at 19:17.

Leading the ladies this week was visiting parkrunner from Australia, Shona Drake.  Shona finished in a time of 22:50. She was followed in by fellow Aussie Dana Lanceman at 23:17 who completed her 235th parkrun this week.  Local runner Wendy Hawkes was the third female across at 23:52.

Personal Bests today were achieved by: Paul Rose 19:17, Adam Eason 19:25, Andre Chalmers 20:46, Paul Pascoe 21:25, Matthew Murray 21:50, Adam Mullally 22:02, Leon Jim 23:41, Sean Drader 24:31, David Urwin 24:43, Ezequiel Nunez 25:23, Carmella Bury 25:26, Hannah Boaler 25:49, Matilda Hughes 25:55, Robyn Hamilton 26:31, Wendy Richardson 29:27, Christine Skipworth 29:31, Rachel Rose 31:42, Chris Hamilton 32:07, Mark Wilson 34:35, Angela Coates

We are excited to announce that we will be holding our second annual Christmas Day parkrun!  Our same Summer start time of 8:00am will apply and be sure to bring your Santa hats and fave festive active wear to the event! We could use a few marshals for that day, so if you want to help bring holiday parkrun cheer to your fellow parkrunners please reach out to us on Facebook or to queenstownhelpers@parkrun.com.

The volunteer roster has filled up nicely we could use some more volunteer marshal roles for December 28th and almost all roles for January 4th.  Please help us to make Queenstown parkrun happen every week.  If you haven't volunteered before or not in a long time, please reach out to us.  It's fun, easy, and we will train you on what to do.

Queenstown parkrun – Event number 75 – 7th December 2019

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 75 - Wet Feet Edition
7th December 2019

This week 60 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 31 were first timers and 3 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 12 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and South Africa!

It has been a very wet and rainy time here in Central Otago.  Our friends in Wanaka have been also hit very hard by this weather system so much that Lake Wanaka has overflowed and unfortunately Wanaka parkrun had to be cancelled this week.  We wish all of our friends in Wanaka the best of luck and that they are safe and dry during this time. Despite the heavy rains we were able to hold a very wet Queenstown parkrun.  The start area footpath had ankle deep water and an alternative route to attempt and keen dry feet was on offer.  Some parkrunnners chose the dry feet option at the start but almost all of them chose the wet feet option towards the finish.  Thankfully it was not waist deep like some of our regular parkrunners and volunteers experienced on the the Kepler Challenge experienced this weekend!

A massive thanks to our volunteers who helped survey the course and ensure that the event could go on.  At start time like so many other weeks that Queenstown was pummeled with bad weather before and after parkrun, the rain let up and our parkrunners embarked on a run to remember!

Leading the pack today was the local bearded legend, Seamus Costello, who despite not wearing his trademark red singlet that gives him his running power still managed a first finish in the wet conditions at 20:03. Chasing Seamus in for overall second and the first female across the line was Aussie parkrunner Davina Smith at 20:17. The second and third males across the line unfortunately did not have their barcodes and were not recorded. Following Davina in was local parkrunnners Isobel Barry and Wendy Hawkes at 23:51 and 24:25.

Despite the challenging conditions we had three PBs this week: Finn Wallis(21:04), Craig Shaw(24:32), and Matilda Hughes(26:25).

Queenstown parkrun – Event number 70 – 26th October 2019 – Halloween Edition

Queenstown parkrun - Halloween Edition
Event number 70
26th October 2019

This week 89 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 41 were first timers and 8 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 10 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA!

Reports of strange creatures were lurking around Queenstown Gardens greeted our parkrunners this week for the second annual Halloween edition of Queenstown parkrun.  Ominous red balloons were also spotted at the entrance of the forest section of the course possibly signalling a warning to our participants.  Luckily all of our parkrunners made it through the course unscathed after being chased by Dave "Michael Myers" Pearson, Dani "Ghost Face" Moynes, Michelle "Samara The Ring" Moynes, and Shannon "Zombie" Pennefather.

Starting the spooky proceedings today was a celebration of some parkrun milestones.  Local junior parkrunner, Finn Wallis, completed his 10th parkrun today surrounded and supported by his fellow mates who cheered him along.  Local parkrunner, Judith O'Neill, completed her 50th parkrun with 46 of those runs here at Queenstown!  Visiting parkrunner from Adelaide, South Australia, David Ringwood, celebrated his 100th parkrun with us today thanks for his mates from his home parkrun of Torrens.

Smiling, and putting on a happy face with Joker makeup on, Colin Kirkpatrick, earned himself a new PB today with a speedy time of 16:27.  The native Queenstowner who has been living in the USA has been on a streak of three PBs since returning to town.  We look forward to more speedy finishes from Colin whilst he is back in town.  Visiting parkrunner from the UK, Joshua Whiteley, slashed through the line in a very deadly time of 18:10.  Invercargill parkrunner, Brennan Rhodes, blazed across the finish at 18:48.

Visiting parkrunner from Australia, Susi WIlson, screamed like a banshee across the line as the first female to survive the haunted Queenstown Gardens today.  Susi also set the age graded record for her category today in the process! Another age category record holder at Queenstown parkrun, Julie Wilson, returned(from the depths?) today for second across the line.  Julie was about 40 seconds off of her age category record with a time of 22:44 this week  in what is still a very respectable time!  Jude "The Undead Remarkable Vet" O'Neill completed her 50th parkrun with a time of 23:34.

If possible, we are considering volunteer pacers every week leading up to Queenstown Marathon weekend in November.  This will be determined based on the volunteer coverage we have for our various roles.  If you haven't volunteered in awhile(or ever) it would be great to have some extra help in the coming weeks as some regular volunteers will be away at various events.
