Queenstown parkrun – Event number 85 – 8th February 2020

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 85
8th February 2020

This week 90 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 43 were first timers and 8 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 15 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Ireland, and the USA.

After a week of wild weather in Otago, Southland, and Fiordland, it looked to potentially be a very wet morning of Queenstown parkrun.  In true Queenstown parkrun fashion, the god of weather, Tāwhirimātea, gave us another reprieve to conduct our fave weekly 5km event.

Proceedings started with this week's RD, Fleur, celebrating some parkrun milestones.  Local Queenstowner, Rob Barry, completed his 50th parkrun with 46 of those parkruns here in town.  This milestone comes one week after he completed the feat of joining the 50-54 age group. We were also excited to celebrate two milestones for visiting parkrunners from the UK, Clem and Janice Clement.  Team Clement completed their 200th parkrun with us today and also completed their Alphabet Challenge to log a parkrun starting with every letter. With their finish today and claiming their "Q", they were successful in their quest after a long journey to Queenstown. Clem even helped us sort finish tokens at Yonder cafe as well to show his dedication to parkrun.

Visiting parkrunner Finlay Todd was first across the line today in an impressive time of 17:19. He was followed in my local Queenstowner Jack McKay who finished at 18:14.  Visiting parkrunner Daragh Reynolds made his return to Queenstown today for his third event and rounded out the top 3 finishers with a time of 19:39.

Shannon O'Sullivan will remember her first ever parkrun as she was the first female across the line today at 21:16.  Congrats on opening up your parkrun account with a great run today, Shannon.  Amanda Harvey returned to Queenstown parkrun today and finished second behind Shannon with a time of 22:02.(that's a lot of twos there, Amanda!) Gemma Beckman-Cross was the third female to finish today in her first ever parkrun at a time of 22:44.

On 7th March we will be having our International Women's Day edition of Queenstown parkrun.  We encourage everyone to wear purple and bring all the Women in their lives to join us for parkrun.  Jamie Seymour will be Run Directing that day and is looking for an all-woman volunteer crew including pacers for this event. Reach out to us on Facebook or at queenstown@parkrun.com if you are interested in helping out.

Thank you to Queenstown's only store dedicated solely(pun intended) to running, The Frontrunner Queenstown, for being our local sponsor. We sincerely thank Paul Garvie and the team at Frontrunner for being big supporters of parkrun and for their commitment to our local event. Be sure to visit the team at Frontrunner on Beach St for all of your running shoe and gear needs and also their new location in Frankton at the Queenstown Central centre near K-Mart.

Another week has come and gone for our fave day of the week in Queenstown: parkrunday.  Summer conditions and overcast skies greeted our participants this week.  We had another week of above average participation numbers and thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy our event with us. We celebrated Wendy Hawkes' 25th volunteer effort today and thank her for all of her support of Queenstown parkrun.

Visiting parkrunner Shane Mellum led the pack today and finished in a time of 18:36.  He was followed in by local legend Seamus Costello who crossed at 19:25.  Jonas Junckes rounded out the top three men with a time of 19:30.

Emily Molloy returned to Queenstown parkrun today to lead the ladies with a time of 20:18.  She earned herself a Queenstown parkrun PB this week that was her third PB in a row at our event and her third first finish.  Local runner Isobel Barry was the second female across the line also earning herself a new PB at 22:46.  Another local runner, Wendy Hawkes followed Isobel in at a time of 23:44.

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 82
18th January 2020

This week 120 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 72 were first timers and 12 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 11 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and the USA!

This week's Run Report is brought to you by Run Director Fleur Douglas.

After a week of slowly increasing temperatures, Saturday dawned with perfect running conditions: 13 degrees and absolutely still! (It’s worth mentioning, hopefully without jinxing anything, that our favourite Saturday event seems to come with a bit of a weather blessing. In our lifetime we’ve had only one weather related cancellation, and countless weekends where torrential rain stopped within half an hour of our start!)

True to form with this weather, the course was very fast. Our first two runners across the line came in with a sprint finish, leading locals Aleks Cheifetz and Colin Kirkpatrick coming in at 16:57 and 16:58 respectively – with an 11 second PB for Aleks. Well done to both of you speedsters! First female was visitor K Pham in her 407th parkrun, recording a fantastic 20:50 while in town on holiday. Number one barkrunner this week was Elfie Ernst, leading his mum Gabbie over the line in a cool 25:56. In terms of milestones, visitor Jack Robertson achieved his junior parkrun milestone of 10! Well done Jack!

The 12 PBs of the day (of only 42 people who had run the course before) showed just how perfect a day for running this was. A special shoutout to Michelle Metcalf for breaking the 30 minute barrier with her 29:55! This was Michelle’s second PB in two weeks – so we can’t wait to see what this week holds. We had 82 parkrunners coming in under 30 minutes, an absolutely exceptional result.

Thank you to Queenstown's only store dedicated solely(pun intended) to running, The Frontrunner Queenstown, for being our local sponsor. We sincerely thank Paul Garvie and the team at Frontrunner for being big supporters of parkrun and for their commitment to our local event. Queenstown parkrun – Event number 81 – 11th January 2020

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 81
11th January 2020

This week 114 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 71 were first timers and 10 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 14 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and Singapore!

This week's Run Report contributor - Fleur Douglas, Run Director

It dawned a chilly and surprisingly quiet morning for the 81st edition of Queenstown parkrun, as a traffic accident closed the main road in and out of town. Though our event has a fantastic split between locals and visitors, it’s unusual to see no locals at all until ten minutes before start time – and led to some panic and scrambling from the Run Director to try and get enough volunteers to start the event!

With some back roads hastily navigated, and in one case, some cars dropped in favour of running the rest of the way into town, we had enough help and got the event underway only two minutes late. A special acknowledgment must go to the visitors who offered to forgo their parkrun tourism in the spirit of having the event go ahead – we were simultaneously grateful and glad we didn’t need to take you up on your generosity.

An exciting three-way sprint finish saw teenage visitor Eli Barker come across the line in a speedy 18:29, in spite of being in the middle of his warmup when the run started – and having to come back to the start to get going! It was a day for the younger age groups, with first female finisher Anna Colgan running in the 11-14 age group and finishing in an awesome 22:02. First local across the line was Arjan Schenk with a fantastic 20:01 PB.

With the traffic, we had many late starters – including Michelle Moynes who, in spite of starting ten minutes late, ran an unbelievable 30:27 and would have likely beaten her 23:12 PB had she had the chance! - and the Belic family from Forster in Australia, who completed their very first parkrun tourism in spite of a late start. For once, we had absolutely no buggies or barkrunners on the course – though late starters and finish volunteers were treated to the very funny sight of the Run Director’s puppy (and our course mascot) Loki dramatically throwing himself in the air in refusal to run with his grandfather, and denying himself a rare barkrun first finish!

Special mention has to go to all the volunteers at this event, who did absolutely everything they could to get into town and make the event happen, and who were all willing to change roles at the last minute to cover what needed to be done, as well as getting started the moment they arrived. It was no easy feat to make the day run as smoothly as it did, and you are all superstars!

Congratulations to all 114 finishers, and we hope to see you back again!

Queenstown parkrun – Event number 80 – 4th January 2020 – First of the Decade Edition

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 80 - First of the Decade Edition
4th January 2020

This week 131 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 66 were first timers and 18 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part.  We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Singapore, France, the USA, and UK!

A sunny and cool morning greeted our parkrunners with quite a strong breeze on the outer lakeside path of Queenstown parkrun.  It was still a beautiful morning to start the new year of parkrunning here in Queenstown and what a morning it was!

We have a new course record!!  Kiwi-born, UK-based parkrunner Paul Martelletti flew off the start line at a blistering pace this morning before setting the new course record of 15:32.  This bests the previous record set by Jack Beaumont in December 2019 by 4 seconds.  Jack was on hand to witness the new record as he was tail walking today and congratulated Paul on his time.  Well done Paul on raising the bar here at Queenstown parkrun and keep on visiting parkruns to take down records!  Local parkrunner Zak Brown was the second parkrunner across the line today at 18:15 with visiting parkrunner Jordan Donnelly following him in at 18:22.

Dunedin based parkrunner Georgia Mitchell added to her collection of first finishes at Queenstown parkrun today with a time of 20:45.  She now is tied with Abby Fookes and Rachel Kennedy for an impressive 6 first finishes at our event.  Visiting parkrunners from the UK, Jessica Cocker and Lisa Reid followed Georgia in at 20:52 and 22:32 respectively.

We need almost all roles for January 18th!  Please help us to make Queenstown parkrun happen every week.  If you haven't volunteered before or not in a long time, please reach out to us.  It's fun, easy, and we will train you on what to do.

Thank you to Queenstown's only store dedicated solely(pun intended) to running, The Frontrunner Queenstown, for being our local sponsor for 2019. We sincerely thank Paul Garvie and the team at Frontrunner for being big supporters of parkrun and for their commitment to our local event. Queenstown parkrun – Event number 79 – 28th December 2019 – Last of the Decade Edition

This week 116 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 65 were first timers and 12 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 11 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Canada, and the USA! This week, we turn the Run Report over to our newest Run Director and 1/2 of Team Duck Patrol with her barkrunner pal Loki, Fleur Douglas!

Today saw the last Queenstown parkrun of the entire decade, and as we get to the end of the year it’s a good chance to look back at the first full year of our local event.

Across 2019, we saw visitors from many different countries, culminating in our best ever attendance (172) on the 23rd November – a week after the Queenstown Marathon, as athletes from around the world stayed an extra week to enjoy Queenstown and join us. 1052 new PBs since we started in 2018, and we saw our second Halloween and Christmas Day celebrations as well as having our volunteers all dress up for our first anniversary run back in June.

Our course records of 15:38 for men (Jack Beaumont) and 17:41 (Caitlin Adams) for women went untouched all year, though back in April Julie Wilson set our best ever age grading score for the course, with 87.92% in the VW60-64 category! The fastest times in 2019 went to Colin Kirkpatrick (16:27) and Nancy Jiang (18:26).

As for volunteers, across the year we had a total of 539 different volunteer tasks performed: an incredible number of people putting their hands up each week. That even included our course record holder Jack Beaumont featuring as tailwalker this week, so everybody who ran or walked can say they beat the record holder across the line!

It’s been a wonderful year sharing our weekly loop with visitors around the world, be they stopping by deliberately to finish off their parkrun alphabet, celebrating their 50th, 100th or 250th with us or just stopping by on their holidays. With a great core group of locals – we even had our first local Rachel Kennedy register her 50th parkrun mostly running at Queenstown this year – it’s the best way to meet the local running community – and share a coffee afterwards.

Thanks to everyone who joined us this year, and we hope to see you again in 2020!

Fleur Douglas, Run Director - Queenstown parkrun

Queenstown parkrun
Event number 78 - Christmas Day Edition
25th December 2019

This week 152 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 55 were first timers and 25 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 20 different clubs took part.  We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Ireland, the USA, and Germany!!

Christmas arrived into Queenstown today with a cloudy, cool, and still conditions by Lake Wakatipu for parkrunning.  An ever so slight few drops of rain were felt, but nothing of any measure to dampen the festive spirits of participants today.  We smashed last year's Christmas Day attendance of 117 today with an outstanding 152 parkrunners.  Thank you so much to everyone who took time out of their Christmas morning and volunteered today to make this event possible. Santa Claus was the special Run Director today and got the festivities kicked off.

Ciaran Faherty from Auckland logged his second Queenstown parkrun today and was first across the line.  He gifted himself a new course PB at 16:48 knocking 41 seconds off his previous time.  Sam Upton from the UK returned for his second week to our event and made it another second finisher spot with a PB of 17:28 knocking 18 seconds off last week's effort.  Sam Howell from the UK rounded out the top three in his debut at our event with a time of 18:26.

21st December 2019

This week 120 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 73 were first timers and 11 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 24 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Japan!

The wild weather continued this week in Queenstown but like so many other weeks we were gifted with great conditions for parkrunning at event time.  The temperature would not have been out of place at the end of Winter or in early Spring, but we were graced by glorious sunshine and light clouds that made for beautiful viewing for our visiting parkrunners.  Unfortunately our friends at Wanaka parkrun had to cancel their event again due to damage and debris on their course.  We were happy to welcome some Wanaka parkrunners and tourists staying Wanaka for our event today.  Fingers crossed that our friends over the Crown Range can get back to parkrunning again soon.

Coming across the line first today was Sydney based runner, David Criniti at 17:43.  David is the founder of The Run Beyond Project, a charitable organisation that uses running as a means to help promote goal setting, commitment, and resilience to high schoolers in need.  Be sure and check out their FB page at https://www.facebook.com/therunbeyondproject/ .  Hot on David's heels was UK based parkrunner, Sam Upton, who followed the Aussie in at 17:46.  Dunedin based parkrunner, Elliot O'Sullivan, rounded out the top three at 18:25.

In front of the female pack today was another Aussie parkrunner, Caitlin Fowlds.  Caitlin sped across the line at 19:35 today for the first finish and 8th overall.  Christchurch based parkrunner, Emily Molloy was the second female across the line today at 20:32 earning herself a new PB in her fourth parkrun here in Queenstown.  Junior parkrunner from Wanaka, Billie Crowe was the third female in at 21:39.

We are excited to announce that we will be holding our second annual Christmas Day parkrun!  Our same Summer start time of 8:00am will apply and be sure to bring your Santa hats and fave festive active wear to the event! Santa Claus will be Run Directing again this year and there will be candy canes at the finish line.

This week saw a return to drier conditions for our fave weekly 5km event.  The weather calmed and the puddles cleared making our course clear for ready for running.  Unfortunately Wanaka parkrun had to cancel again this weekend due to the lake flooding and damaging their course.  The cancellation gave a number of Wanaka parkrunners the ability to come over and run our course including Event Directors Adam and Jane Sharman. Whilst we were bummed to hear they had to cancel their event, we were excited to have our friends from over the Crown Range come visit us for a run.  We hope things improve over the coming days so that Wanaka parkrun can get back to business as soon as possible.
