Event number 88 - Leap Day Edition
29th February 2020
This week 107 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 56 were first timers and 13 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part. We had visitors from across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, the USA, Ireland, and Germany!
The morning temperatures are starting to cool and giving us a reminder that Autumn is on its way. This made for perfect parkrunning conditions this week in Queenstown Gardens. Today was "Leap Day" and the first time parkrun was held globally on the 29th of February. The next time parkrunday will be on this date is in 2048. By then we anticipate there will have to be a 1000 parkrun shirt made. :) Many of our parkrunners today took the opportunity to take "leap shots" and do "Scott Airplanes" for our volunteer photographer Neville Britton who once again captured excellent photos of our fave weekly 5km!
Leaping across the line in speedy first finish fashion today was visiting parkrunner from the UK, Jonathan Crickmore. Jonathan made short work of the course flying in at 16:45. The local red singlet legend, Seamus Costello, was next across the line at 19:04 with Demitri Pappas completing his 10th parkrun at Queenstown in a time of 19:11.
Local trail and ultra running phenom Nancy Jiang returned to Queenstown parkrun as a recovery run after last weekend's Old Ghost Ultra. Nancy was the first female across the line at 19:36. Visiting parkrunner Laura Robertson was hot on Nancy's heels today finishing two seconds behind her at 19:38. Amanda Harvey rounded out the top three ladies today with a time of 21:37.
On 7th March we will be having our International Women's Day edition of Queenstown parkrun. We encourage everyone to wear purple and bring all the Women in their lives to join us for parkrun. Jamie Seymour will be Run Directing that day and is looking for an all-woman volunteer crew including pacers for this event. Reach out to us on Facebook or at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in helping out. We still do need a few volunteer roles to complete the roster.
On 14th March we will have a St Patrick's Day themed parkrun. Be sure to wear your greenest active wear, hats, and festive gear to celebrate our friends from the Emerald Isle.
Thank you to Queenstown's only store dedicated solely(pun intended) to running, The Frontrunner Queenstown, for being our local sponsor.
