Owairaka parkrun – Event #38 – 31 July, 2021

Owairaka parkrun
Event number 38
31st July 2021

The day dawned with a calm and mild morning, perfect for running. 67 people turned up and ran, jogged, walked, pushed prams and followed their barkrunners around the course. It was great to have 12 first timers, including 5 brand new parkrunners. Welcome Mike, Elizabeth, Tulsi, Linda and Adeline!

The Olympics have been inspiring us all, including all the cyclists out this morning to be dodged on the cycleway. Despite the obstacles, 17 participants surged through to record new Personal Bests. Next week pacers will be on hand to help you meet a new goal whether it is 35 minutes or 18 minutes.

We had an exciting milestone for Owairaka parkrun today with our 1000th runner! Over our 38 events we have now had 1009 different people try our beautiful course! Since 24th October 2020, these 1,009 participants have completed 3,215 parkruns covering a total distance of 16,075 km, including 655 new Personal Bests. A total of 172 individuals have volunteered 589 times. We hope to see some more of the 1009 putting their hand up to volunteer.

The event was made possible by 15 wonderful smiley volunteers:

Stu MCGARVA • Shan LEE • Craig LINDSAY • Rosemary BYGRAVE • Owen MITCHELL • Bridget LAWRENCE • Abby ZHANG • Julie COLLARD • Winona LEE • James MCLENNAN • Francis MCCORMICK • Sandra HULSE • Leanne COMER • Gillian ROACH.
A very special thank you and congratulations is in order to John KELLY who celebrated 25 volunteer efforts and 50 runs as our tailwalker today. 1 milestone is not enough for some people! It takes some effort to organise to get them on the same day. Ros and Julie organised balloons, bikkies and even a cape to make the most of the special moment. If you haven't volunteered in a while, or want to earn your own double milestone, check out the future roster and get on board. It's lots of fun and we will show you exactly what to do.

Ben WATSON floated into first place today with a time of 18.58. Krystyna KNIGHT, the leading lady sped through in fourth place overall. She has now had 8 first finishes, more than any other female at Owairaka. Fantastic effort Krystyna! Our second place male (Sam Bowden) and female both had PBS today, Lauren KELLY shaving off an impressive 58 seconds! Laurinda LEWIS who runs for a very stately age category recorded a new pb of 28:20 and an incredible age grading of 81.24%! Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Owairaka parkrun Results Page.

The male record is held by Paul MARTELLETTI who recorded a time of 14:58 on 16th January 2021 (event number 13).
The female record is held by Freyja PRENTICE who recorded a time of 19:27 on 10th July 2021 (event number 35).
The Age Grade course record is held by Margie PEAT who recorded 93.47% (21:41) on 21st November 2020 (event number 5).

Have a great weekend and we'll see you next parkrunday!
