Run Report 14 August 2021

Barry Curtis parkrun
Event number 406
14th August 2021

The sun was out this week, making conditions a bit warmer, after the wet and cold of the past week.  We have a great community of people at Barry Curtis parkrun, and it is always nice to catch up with parkrun friends each week.

This week 132 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 8 were first timers, including three who came out for their first event ever - well done and we looking forward to seeing you next week!  We celebrated a 200 milestone for Shaun this week - great effort - we trust the balloon didn't slow you down too much!

Conditions were great today and 17 parkrunners recorded new Personal Bests - including juniors James, Timothy, James and Edward, and at the other end of the scale, one of our over 70's, Victor.  Well done to your all on your personal parkrun journey.

The event was made possible by 16 wonderful volunteers:

Chris WHITELEY • Jeremy CROUCHER • Carl HARDLEY-ROUT • Peter ROUT • Karen ROUT • Brian KWOK • Grant LINCOLN • Ray FREEMAN • Rosalie FREEMAN • Ronald LOBJOIT • Keegan KOKKE • Caitlin SHALLARD • Andrew SHALLARD • Siapo AUVAE • Delwyn SMEDLEY • Willi BRYANT

This weeks recipients of the Sequel Cafe coffee vouchers were Siapo and Willi.  You too can be in the draw for a free coffee - simply sign up as a volunteer for one of the upcoming weeks.  If you missed seeing the volunteer board at our event, you can check out the roster online to see where the gaps are and send us an email.  Many hands make light work - and by all accounts this weeks volunteers were having a great time.  And as volunteer coordinator, Ray, has told us on many occasions - volunteering gives you a warm glow inside!  Give it a go.....

And some special acknowledgements.  A big thank you to Sequel Cafe for their warm welcome to us each week - great coffee, great food and lovely staff.  Come and join in the post event camaraderie.  And another big thank you to parkrun NZ sponsor 'The Athlete's Foot' for supporting this event.  Are you in need of some new footwear?  Go and see the team at Botany Town Centre and they will look after you.

Wet, cold, windy, slippery.... a few words to describe today's event. We had 101 brave people run, jog and walk our course today. Two people completed their very first parkrun. It wasn't the best conditions to do it in so good on you, and we hope to see you again soon.

We had visitors from Millwater parkrun and I believe one of them had a fall. We hope that you're not too sore - if you could email us to let us know how you are, that would be great.

Anna achieved a PB today - a really good achievement, given the weather. Another great achievement was Chris completing his 200th parkrun - well done!

Congratulations to Grant and Emily on the Sequel Coffee vouchers. Sequel kindly gives us vouchers to thank some of our volunteers each week. We meet there for our post-parkrun get together and they make great coffees and food. Everyone is welcome to come along and get to know a few fellow parkrunners.

A massive thank you to our volunteers:

Laurie WILSON • Sulaiman HARTLEY • Karen ROUT • Grant LINCOLN • Ray FREEMAN • Hayes FREEMAN • Vanessa FERNANDES • Ronald LOBJOIT • Keegan KOKKE • Jono WILLIS • Maria SHALLARD • Rebekah SHALLARD • Keira SHALLARD • Andrew SHALLARD • Leesa BATHGATE • Abbie LAW • Emily WILLIS

We are thankful for your help today and your willingness to give up your time to make our event run smoothly. If you'd like to give volunteering a go, but you're a bit unsure about it, have a chat to Ray, or send us an email. Full training will be given.

Finally, thank you to our sponsor, The Athlete's Foot. With their support, our event remains free and accessible to anyone who wants to come along.

Run Report 31 July 2021

Barry Curtis parkrun
Event number 404
31st July 2021

The Tuis were singing this morning for parkrun number 404. 145 people ran, jogged and walked the course. Our Run Director David went for a run before our briefing and said he heard a great crowd of spectators cheering him on as he ran along John Walker Promenade. Maybe he’s been watching too much of the Tokyo Olympics? He certainly put in a gold medal performance as Run Director – thank you David!

We had a total of 15 volunteers help us out today:

David DOWLING • Karen ROUT • Grant LINCOLN • Ray FREEMAN • Mita STAUB • Jim NEWBOULD • David EVEREST • Ronald LOBJOIT • Keegan KOKKE • Maria SHALLARD • Caitlin SHALLARD • Keira SHALLARD • Andrew SHALLARD • Gail FLEMING • Tania KOKKE

Thank you to all of you for giving up your time to make our event happen. If you would like to give volunteering a go, please put your name on the whiteboard on Saturday or send us an email. If you’re uncertain about volunteering, it is very easy, and full training will be given. Plus you get the chance to win a free coffee from Sequel Café. Congratulations to David and Ronald (or maybe Tania?!) who were the recipients this morning.

Thank you to Sequel for providing us with the vouchers. They do lovely coffees and food and are very welcoming to any parkrunners who visit after parkrun each Saturday. If you’ve never gone to one of the post-parkrun get-togethers, it’s a great way to get to know people a little better.

This morning we had 12 people do their first Barry Curtis parkrun, 6 of whom did their first ever parkrun. Congratulations, and we hope to see you again. The other 6 people were visiting from Dunedin, Palmerston North and Millwater – it was lovely to have you join us.

Congratulations to the 10 people who recorded new Personal Bests – a great effort in not the easiest of conditions.

Two milestones were celebrated today. Brian received a balloon for his 200th parkrun and Matt received one for his 50th. Well done to you both! Two of our Juniors, Gracie (100) and Thomas (50), received certificates from Grant for recently achieved milestones. Thank you Grant for your kindness to the Juniors.

No rain..... No wind.... Some fog around the edges..... Gorgeous sunshine..... what a lovely morning to parkrun.  And we were joined this week by 127 people who ran, jogged and walked the course at Barry Curtis Park.

Things were relatively quiet this week with no visitors and no milestones to celebrate.  However we did have one lovely new parkrunner out on their first event - Welcome to Barry Curtis parkrun.  We trust you enjoyed your morning run and we look forward to seeing you again.

In the great conditions, 9 of our number recorded new Personal Bests, with particular note our juniors Emily, Kate and Willow - congratulations on your efforts. .

The event was made possible by 14 volunteers:

Jeremy CROUCHER • Karen ROUT • Ray FREEMAN • Rosalie FREEMAN • Gareth JESS • Cathy WELCH • Tristan NICHOLLS • Ronald LOBJOIT • Keegan KOKKE • Chanpen KANABOOT • Caitlin SHALLARD • Mia FALETANOAI • Andrew SHALLARD • Colin WICHMAN

We are so appreciative of our volunteers, without which this event could not happen.  There were a number of vacancies for the next two weeks, but Ray cleverly stood at the end of the finish chute with the volunteer board and a marker, and miraculously our spaces are filled.  This weeks winners of the Sequel Coffee voucher draw were Jeremy and Colin.

You too can be entered in this weekly draw - entry is very easy. no complicated questions or tests - all you have to do is volunteer.  Either write your name on the board on a Saturday morning or send an email to barrycurtis@parkrun.com with the job you would like to do - the roster is available online so you can see what jobs are available - at www.parkrun.co.nz/barrycurtis.  Have you volunteered yet - many hands make light work?

Run Report 17 July 2021

17th July 2021

Well, the wet weather certainly came through last night, and the rain and wind were pretty violent sounding when we woke up.  However, the hardy, or crazy (depending on your point of view), ones who turned up this week were rewarded with a dry event, although rather windy, and definitely cold for the volunteers.

This week 90 people ran, jogged and walked the rather sodden course at Barry Curtis park.  We had no first timers this time (that might be a first), but we did welcome visitors from Wellington and Invercargill (the latter being family of our Shallard, Faletanoai and Willis clans - so nice to see you again).

There were three milestones to celebrate this week, with one of our juniors Gracie doing her 100th event, and also David, and Laura who were each doing their 50th event.  What a great  celebration, and particularly impressed with the commitment to come out this week!  Well done to you all.

Our Run Director Tristran suggested that there would not be any PB's this week, but how wrong was he.  It was juniors all the way, and they are all under 10 - Luca, Ruby, Emily and Sienna - Way to go!!!!  You guys rock!!

And as always this event is not possible without our wonderful volunteers.  We are so grateful to the 16 parkrunners who stepped up this week:

Carl HARDLEY-ROUT • Karen ROUT • Grant LINCOLN • Ray FREEMAN • Rosalie FREEMAN • Tristan NICHOLLS • Vanessa FERNANDES • Ronald LOBJOIT • Chris WALLACE • Maria SHALLARD • Caitlin SHALLARD • Andrew SHALLARD • Hannah SHALLARD • Delwyn SMEDLEY • Tania KOKKE • Jonathon HILL

Our Sequel Cafe coffee vouchers this week went to Vanessa and Tania, who not only got themselves along to volunteer at parkrun this week, but also ensured their partners were here too!  That is what is so great about parkrun - it is a family event in all ways.  You too can be in the draw for a coffee voucher - just add your name to the volunteer board.  You can check out the roster online, and then send us an email and we can add you in.
