Run Report 8 August 2020

Barry Curtis parkrun
Event number 362
8th August 2020

Bit wet today then!  It has been quite some time since we had such a wet parkrun and the numbers reflected that with 114 people running, jogging and walking the course with us this week.  Andrew, our poor run director today,  was trying his best to get through all his spiel, but there was a lot of desire from those gathered to just get going.  However H&S all ticked off, and later, after a coffee at the lovely Sequel Cafe, the faces were smiling!,

So we had just 2 first timers today, one doing his first parkrun and one visiting us. Welcome to Barry Curtis and thank you for your dedication to come out in this weather!  Hopefully the friendliness of the people made up for the rainy start to the day.

We did however celebrate a number of milestones: Carl doing event number 250 today - what an achievement - well done!  Kate on her run number 200 today, Neil and Selina on their event number 150, and Rox on number 50.  Way to go to you all.  We also acknowledged Rosalie for her 200th last week in Cambridge, and Prisha, one of our juniors, completing 10 events last week.  Congratulations from us all for your great work in achieving these milestones.

We had 11 recorded new Personal Bests, notably three of our juniors Austin, Taylah and Anwen.  That is a good effort in conditions like today.

The event was made possible by 15 volunteers:

Karen CROSSAN • Peter ROUT • Kate PATTINSON • Grant LINCOLN • Ray FREEMAN • Rosalie FREEMAN • Gareth JESS • David EVEREST • Ronald LOBJOIT • Keegan KOKKE • Angela WALLACE • Caitlin SHALLARD • Rebekah SHALLARD • Andrew SHALLARD • Nicola CRAWFORD

Thank you so much for your help and support with this event - we really can't do it without you.  And so to all you others out there - why not give it a go.  We have quite a few gaps over the next few weeks.  You can add your name to the board on a Saturday morning, or check out the roster on our website and send us an email.  Our volunteer coordinator, Ray, would love to hear from you.

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Barry Curtis parkrun Results Page.

1st August 2020

This week 153 people braved the chilly weather to run, jog and walk the course. Maybe the cold wind was a motivator for people to finish quickly as we had 26 people who recorded personal bests. That's amazing! A special mention to our junior PB'ers: Erin, Jordan, Austin, Taylah, Luna, and Paige.

We had ten people attend Barry Curtis parkrun for the first time. These included visitors from Kapiti, Hawkes Bay and the U.K. There were also four people who did their very first parkrun. We hope you all enjoyed your time with us today. Come again!

Gail celebrated her 50th parkrun this morning. Congratulations Gail - a great achievement. There's also a rumour that Rosalie, a regular walker, volunteer and all-round lovely lady, may have snuck off in a campervan and done her 200th parkrun at Cambridge this weekend. We hope you're back next Saturday so we can congratulate you Rosalie.

All parkruns around the world are run by volunteers. Our event was made possible by 15 wonderful people:

"Hallo norge! Tena koutou Norway!" These were the words that Ray, our run director, started our parkrun with this morning. Today we dedicated our event to the Norwegian parkruns who aren't yet able to resume due to COVID-19. Our thoughts were with you Norway.

Barry Curtis parkrun had 169 people "walk, jog, run and dance their way to 5km of freedom and glory" this morning. Thanks Dwaine for the quote!!

We welcomed 12 first timers, including visitors from Palmerston North and Greytown. We hope you enjoyed your time with us today. And to those who did their very first one, parkrun is very addictive, so we hope you come again and again!

25 people achieved personal bests this morning. Amazing! A special mention to the large number of Juniors who got a PB: Joshua, Erin, Olivia, Keira, Miren, Taylah, Hannah and Anwen. Congratulations.

There were two milestones celebrated this morning. Michael completed his 150th parkrun and Sharon completed her 50th. Well done to both of you.

WE'RE BACK!!!!!

We in New Zealand are so fortunate to be in this position, that we could re-start our parkrun events today.  Ray, our run director for today, told us all that it had been 114 days since we last held parkrun here.  So much has happened in that time. Some of us have had a problem with the 'Covid calories', while others have a new found love for exercise and the outdoors.  We had 127 people come out today to join us - the buzz, the laughter, the happy voices and faces, the reconnecting, the sharing of Covid stories, the running, the walking - that is so great to see.  It was a rather grey day at Barry Curtis Park, but that didn't matter - we were all just so pleased to be there.

Our thanks go to Maria, one of our event directors, for all the work behind the scenes that she has done to get us ready for this morning - there was a lot of 'paperwork' to get ready and a lot of 'boxes' to be ticked off at parkrun HQ to allow us to start today.  One of these was to provide renewed permission from the landowner to use this park - that of course is Auckland Council.  After some persistence, Maria has received written confirmation that we don't need written permission to use this park - it is a public park and we are a public event.... so just as well we have that sorted!  During our lockdown, she was also communicating with event directors from other NZ parkruns, and with officials from Australia.  Thank you for looking after us all Maria.

So, this week 127 people ran, jogged and walked with us, of whom 11 were first timers to our park, including 8 doing their very first parkun, and an international visitor from the UK.  Welcome to you all to our lovely park and to this amazing community of like minded people.

And for the first Saturday back, we celebrated some milestones, with Kynan, Craig, Colin and Siapo all completing their 50th events today - congratulations to you all, but what a long time to sit on 49!  Great conditions favoured some with 16 recorded new Personal Bests - of particular mention were two of our juniors, Caleb and Bethan.  Great effort everyone.

And of course this event would not be possible without our great volunteers.  We are so fortunate to have a so many so willing to help out - that old adage of many hands making light work is so true.  We thank the following 11 people today:

Richard BOWERS • Peter ROUT • Karen ROUT • Grant LINCOLN • Ray FREEMAN • Rosalie FREEMAN • Ronald LOBJOIT • Jono WILLIS • Maria SHALLARD • Matthew SHALLARD • Andrew SHALLARD

Remember if you would like to volunteer, you can add your name to the whiteboard on a Saturday morning, or email us a barrycurtis@parkrun.com.  Check out the volunteer roster on our website.

Jono, our social media guru, did a facebook live-stream video this morning of our morning preamble and the start of our event - you can see this great video on our facebook page.  Thanks Jono for keeping our social media presence up to date.

Finally, we would like to remind you that in order to minimise touch surfaces we are doing away with our file box of your spare personal barcodes.  For the next few weeks you will be able to retrieve your barcode if you need it, but it won't then go back in the box.  There are lots of options for you so that you always have your personal barcode at parkrun - print out some extra barcodes and keep in your car/s, keep one in your phone wallet, or look at the 'shop' tab on our website and purchase a wristband or keytag barcode.  Remember, No barcode, No result.

We're looking forward to seeing you all, and others of our parkrun family, next week.
