parkrun report – 24 November 2018

EVENT #57 - 24 NOVEMBER 2018

Every time I volunteer to write the parkrun report I struggle, not because I don't know what to say, I struggle because I have so much to talk about! I have all the ideas flowing, but also am conscious of the fact I don't want to turn the report into too much of a novel. Parkrun has become a real passion for me, I absolutely love the inclusive community feel and the people I meet and talk with each week.

Today my 8 year old was keen to come and the first thing that caught his eye when we arrived at the bridge was Kate in her 25 volunteer shirt. He pointed it out and told me that he would really like to earn that shirt too. So far he has earned 3 volunteer credits, and is booked in for more volunteer sessions over the next few weeks.

Off we set, it was nice to let go of the time and to just enjoy the run with my eight year old. After a couple of walk breaks leading up to the half way point he started hitting his stride. I found his kryptonite at the 3km marker, where I was able to distract him enough that he managed to run the last 2km with no walk breaks. All I had to do was to talk constantly about Minecraft, the ENTIRE 2 km!  Whatever works right? We were both proud once we crossed the finish line, and a lot more knowledgeable about Minecraft.

When running with my kids I get to see first hand how a bit of cheering can help kids especially when it is coming from others. Thank you so much to Liz and Erin at the turn around, Nathan on the camera, the finish line volunteers and other parkrunners today who told my son he was doing a great job, the positivity certainly helped keep him going!  Whenever I am running I do try to support our young parkrun participants and offer them some encouragement because I know what a difference it can make.

Congratulations to all 157 parkrunners today and welcome to our first timers: Peter BAXTER, Natasha APPERLEY, Lisa PALATCHIE, Wayne TERRY Kristin MOORE, Debra BEECH, Michael WEI, Dave MILES, Wesley CLARKE, Kylee WARREN, Bernadette BROKENSHIRE, and David HAYMAN.

We also welcomed some well-travelled parkrunners from Auckland, South Africa and Australia: Janita BOTHA, Margie PEAT, Peter WALKER, Craig MCINTYRE, Karen WALKER, Craig GALBRAITH. Margie was our first female finisher today with a very impressive age graded score of 90.85%, this is a new age graded record for Palmerston North – well done!

The following 22 people also found their kryptonite today (I'm guessing it wasn't Minecraft chat in their case though!)  congratulations on your new PB: Andrew SILVER, Karl OERTEL, Kamal Dip SINGH, Mark PINNY, Sebastian HAYMAN, Stacey GREANEY, Craig OSMAN, Steve ALLEN, Karen MANNINEN, Krista HANDYSIDE, Jeremy MANNINEN, Phil COWIE, Donna PARRIS, Annette HANLEY, Warren PATTERSON, Francie SCHWASS, Kristina CARIGA, Melissa CORLETT, Faye FEARON, Jane RATTRAY, Cherilynn BUTLER, and Heather MCGREGOR.

Thanks as always to the volunteers that make parkrun happen for us all to enjoy: Johanna AITCHISON, Kate BILLYARD, Ilona FAASEN, Sean FAASEN, Madison GUNNING, Caroline LISTER, Liz LONGLEY, Nathan RAM, Kate SOUTHERN, Erin WHEELER, and Becks ZENTVELD. Only 5 more parkruns left in 2018 – check out the roster here and see which gaps you can help. fill: http://www.parkrun.co.nz/palmerstonnorth/futureroster/
